Sumter County Took Over Bushnell's Building Permits
The City of Bushnell and Sumter County adopted reciprocal ordinances, and from April 1, 2025 the county became the main point of contact for building permits, plan review and inspections inside city limits. The city's announcement notes that the county now serves all five Sumter cities plus the unincorporated county.
These days permits for concrete contractors in Bushnell run through Sumter County Building Services, online through its Citizenserve portal or at the county office in Wildwood. There's one wrinkle. A parcel inside the Joint Planning Agreement area around Bushnell can face extra development standards or a request to annex, so check that before you plan a shop or a home there. We look the parcel up on Sumter GIS and ask the city when it falls inside. Our Hernando, Citrus and Sumter permit guide lays the counties side by side.
Bouldery Sand Under Bushnell Yards
Bushnell's ground is different from anything else we sample around Brooksville. Two map units named for boulders below the surface showed up here and nowhere else: Sparr fine sand, bouldery subsurface, and Adamsville fine sand, bouldery subsurface, at 5 of 30 sample points each. Tavares fine sand and Millhopper sand, bouldery subsurface, took 3 points apiece.
For a slab, that means two things. First, water sits higher than in the Candler sand we find under Brookridge and High Point. The federal soil survey puts the shallowest water table near 59 cm, about 23 inches, in the Sparr unit and near 84 cm, about 33 inches, in the Adamsville unit, and it rates 14 of the 30 points somewhat or very limited for houses. Second, when we dig for a thickened edge or a footing, we may find rock in the trench.
That's why, as concrete contractors in Bushnell, we probe on the site visit instead of guessing. If the shovel hits stone, the written estimate spells out how we'll handle it before you sign. Damp ground gets a base built up with clean, compacted fill, so the slab isn't sitting in wet sand through the rainy months.
